Genre Choices versus Series Choices

After watching all of the videos (I think.), I’m curious, is anyone approaching the cookie challenge with a completely new story concept that actually ties into their other genre/s? For example, you write vampire paranormal romances and sci-fi romances, but instead of grabbing a secondary character from one of those series you decide to write a blood-drinking, alien troll romance story.) It technically works with the genres you write, but doesn’t sell a particular series. I know that’s a bad example, but hopefully you guys get the gist.
