KeymasterThe kickoff party is posted in the class area (for now, anyway — I have to discuss the logistics of this with Stacey; video recordings may end up living in the forums rather than the classroom), along with a couple of relevant links!
Feel free to chat here about anything that came up (or didn’t)!

ParticipantHi there. I’m struggling with the POV for my cookie. So I’m releasing my debut thriller this year and I’d love to release to an audience. So the book is from on POV but I was thinking of having a prequel from her mother’s POV (they are running from someone who is revealed in the actual book). But I’m concerned about 1. revealing too much information about the past (which would mess up the twists) and 2. readers liking that POV better and being disappointed with the book. I find this difficult with a thriller because 1. it’s a standalone and 2. I don’t want to give away any hints or clues to the main book. Thoughts?

ParticipantI kinda have something similar. With the details that are in the first book does the MC rely on their mum’s memories of the time. you might be able to write that she saw something but not give away and define any other details. Or maybe have her mum as an unreliable narrator. I’m not to sure how limiting you can make it for it to make sense. I hope this helps.

ParticipantThanks for responding, Jodie! There’s a lot of nuance with it and I don’t want to do it “wrong”. I just had a brainstorming session with a writer friend and I’m thinking since all of my thrillers will be standalone, that I should write a convertible cookie that’s also standalone, featuring a lot of the tropes that I like to write about: i.e. small town secrets, female driven narratives, siblings/family issues. Then those who like that story could branch off to the rest of my future thriller catalog, and not necessarily a certain book in particular? But that puts me in a place to come up with a new story this week LOL. I can’t seem to ever give myself a break ha!

KeymasterThings are just a little different with standalones, and I think this is a good idea. Will you be able to come to any of the scheduled planning sessions? I’d love to chat with you about this more!

Participant@Tammi (I haven’t figured out how to reply to a specific comment yet LOL) I’m going to plan on making this afternoons session, because I’d like to be ambitious and write 2 cookies so I want to talk through both. See you then!

KeymasterSee the date above your picture? Follow that bar to the right and there are some options, one of which is REPLY (right next to the post number). You might have trouble seeing it on account of the godforsaken lack of color around here.
I hope the chat this afternoon was helpful?!!

ParticipantGot it! Thank you.
Chat was helpful, it only took me 24 hours to figure it all out, and now I have 2 solid convertible cookies for my next upcoming releases so yay!

ParticipantHey Tammi and everyone. I’m struggling to jump on the zoom sessions because either I’m asleep 😴 or it doesn’t fall into my toddler’s nap sessions 🙄. So I thought I would ask my question here (wasn’t sure where!?).
The cookie I want to write is for my YA Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel.
At the beginning of the novel my protagonist, Dana, has questions that gets answered by chapter 3.
My cookie would be about Dana’s history/backstory from another character’s POV. In order to make the cookie interesting and a complete story I would have to reveal some of those answers.
Is this a bad thing? It means that then, when they move onto the novel, the reader already has answers before Dana gets them in chapter 3.
